Wacken Open Air Metal Festival 1.-3.8 2002

Thursday

First day on the camp. The morning looked fine, but on the afternoon the weather turned quite suddenly to rain and strong wind which caused quite a lot of damage at the camping area.

Rise and shine, a yawning Matti and Simo.

And somewhat somber Riikka.

Not suprisingly, the guard-tower was again manned by men with big waterguns.

Medium

Klaus had a rough night by the appearance.

Medium

The neighbours started to wake up as well.

While Matti observes.

Skoll starts his engine.

And Lemon tries to locate his feet.

And then it was time to get to the festival-area where the first bands would play on the true metal stage.

Medium
Large
Quite a lot of people had turned up.

Medium
Large
Meanwhile Henkka did some closer aquaintance in the camp with the Behemot.

Medium
Large
Whee, the boys have fun.

Medium
Large
And of course the compulsory comparison.

Medium

Note the skin colouring and the position of the people.

Back at the Frank Camp the sharpeyed cameraman took a buttshot.

The audience was speechless.

When Frank did his sausage-trick.

Frank demonstrated an alternative to hotdog.

Medium

Panoramashot of the camping-area.

Medium
Large
The first band of the festival, Messiah's Kiss.

Medium
Large
Good basic metal. The band gathered quite a good crowd.

Medium
Large
Which the band tried to cheer up further.

Medium
Large
The finnish band Kotipelto was the second performer.

Medium
Large
Unfortunately they had a lot of technical problems since there was a storm-warning and the stageset was changed after the soundcheck (note the opened wall behind the stage).

Medium
Large
During the gig it started to rain, so we had to leave before the end.

Medium
Large
Just in time as the wind grew and it really started to rain almost horisontally.

Medium
Large
The third performer was Blaze. The rain had subsided from hurricane to a mere drizzle at this time and the band got quite a good audience despite the sucking ground.

Medium
Large
'I can't hear you wacken!' And the crowd shouted harder.

Medium
Large
The band played a decent set all in all. There were no technical problems like on the Kotipelto-gig.

Medium
Large
Perhaps the most anticipated performer of the day, Doro.

Medium
Large
The bassplayer.

Medium
Large
Back at the camp where most of the people were as they got tired of the wet.

Medium
Large
Trying to keep the wetness on the inside. Maku hails the camera. Guy to the left was from our neighbouring camp, a travelling barman if I heard correctly.

Bergie applies his mental powers to the problem of what to drink next.
