Manaus + the Amazon

Its raining like hell in Manaus! Got into a nice budget hotel in the center of the town and met mr. Armstrong who sold us a river/jungle trip. Awesome! Everything else is closed, it being the Good Friday and all.

Walked around the town all day with our river guide Rinaldo. Met this homeless looking dude from Trinidad-Tobago who'd traveled like everywhere. Freaky! Ate at a Churrescateria, where they bring you excellent meat as long as you can eat. Cost next to nothing. Best meal so far.

Mr. Armstrong's business card. If you're planning to do a Amazon trip, he gets my recommendation. He even booked our flights for us, getting quite a good deal on them too.
15.4: took a tour in Manaus. our river trip starts tomorrow. Here you see the opera house, which was built by the european rubber barons during the Manaus rubber boom in around 1920s.
The church with the missing tower.
Bananamarket.
The 'old market' in the end of the street. The building is an exact copy of another similar building in Paris, France.
After 2 hours of loading the boat we're off. The weather's perfect, and despite we're stuck with 2 french girls for four days, the mood is high.
Stopped to swim in the river.
At the 'mixing of waters', the point where the black river (Rio Negro) meets the white river. The difference in temperature and pH makes the waters run unmixed for 8km. Looks very weird, the photographs do not do it justice.
Canooing on Rio Negro. The water level was already quite high, so we were able to paddle among the big trees.
The Sloth. Name is well earned.
Our boat, where we slept the first night in hammocks.
Walking the jungle. Saw nice big tarantula spider, but no big snakes (un)fortunately.
Piranha fishing at night. We only got some catfishes. Luckily the guides got piranhas and we got our supper.
Timo and a yellow macao.
Amazon lilies. The leaves last 30 days and can easily carry a small child.
Feeding the caymans. Later we also catched some for closer look.
Bear drinking parrot. Watch out, if you take the glass away before it's empty!
Regular line boats between Manaus and Novo Airao. Bring your own hammock or reserve a "luxury" cabin.
Feeding the pink dolphins.

After several days of jungle diet (rice, potatoes, fish, veggies) we had a greasy pizza upon our return to Manaus. Well, the result was certain, everyone got hit by such a diarrhea there was a continuous race to the toilet the following night. Sayonara Manaus! In the morning we will head to Columbia, and part from Timo who's headed down south, back to sunny Rio.
